Brooklyn Young Republicans Pull Double Duty This Holiday Season; Conduct Successful Food & Toy Drives!

This month, the Brooklyn Republican Party and the Brooklyn Young Republicans ran two joint holiday drives – a toy drive to benefit the children of Soldiers in the NY National Guard and a food drive for families in need for the Basilica of Regis Pacis in Brooklyn.

Throughout December, the Brooklyn Young Republicans have done double duty collecting non-perishable food for families in need and conducting a toy drive at the same time.  “The response to both of our drives has been fantastic,” said Diana Sepulveda, President of the Brooklyn Young Republicans.  “Both drives exceeded my expectations.”

This past week, Diana Sepulveda delivered toys to the children of Soldiers of the NY National Guard 1-258th Field Artillery Unit as part of the Brooklyn Young Republicans’ joint toy drive with the Brooklyn Republican Party.  This week, Diana Sepulveda will be dropping off the non-perishable food collected at Regina Pacis.

“Delivering those toys to so many smiling faces was a thrill I will never forget”, said Sepulveda.  “This is the season of giving, and I am glad to be able to bring some joy to those who need a little happiness this time of year.”

Brooklyn Republican Chair Craig Eaton was happy to support these initiatives.  “Diana is a true leader of our younger generation of Republicans, who have genuinely shown that they care about their community.  I am happy to support them in all they do.”

46th Assembly District Leader Takes Issue with David Storobin’s Comment that Russian Voters Didn’t Come Out to Vote in the 48th District City Council Race

Marcus Nussbaum, one of the two newly elected Republican District Leaders in the 46th Assembly District, has stated that he strongly disagrees with former State Senator and City Council candidate David Storobin’s recent statement that he lost his election because the Russian electorate did not come out to vote.

“This analysis labels the Russian community as disinterested in civic affairs. I found this to be in accurate. As I campaigned, talking with hundreds of Russian constituents, I found the overwhelming majority to be very much concerned with government affairs and eager to cast their votes,” Nussbaum said.

Mr. Storobin’s remarks were included in a Politicker article entitled “Non-Russian Triumphs in ‘Super-Russian’ Council District” written by Ross Barkan last November 7th. Mr. Storobin blamed turnout for the letdown, “It’s disappointing the Russian community tends not to come out in high numbers,” he said, reflecting on his bid.”

Nussbaum explained, “I am of Russian descent, and convinced that my victory last September, together with that of my running mate, Lucretia Regina-Potter, happened because of

the strong support that we received from the Russian Republican community. In order for us to receive such support, we personally asked for it by meeting with as many Republican voters as possible throughout the entire 46th Assembly District.”

“In spite of the fact that the established factions did not support us, we were able to overcome those obstacles and their very strong opposition. In my opinion, Mr. Storobin lost because he failed to reach out to those people, including myself and my co-leader, who had just succeeded in convincing a large number of Republican voters to actually come out and vote in a Primary election,” Nussbaum stated.

“Could it have been political rather than cultural considerations that were at play?” Nussbaum asked. “At this stage, one is inclined to conclude that perhaps Mr. Storobin did not value our support, or worse, he may have been instructed not to reach out to us by his alignment with one established Republican faction.”

“The result of all of the bickering and infighting among Brooklyn Republicans is that it is almost impossible for Republican candidates for public office to be elected. We must stand united, work for a common victory, and overcome these petty differences in order to succeed. It is not a community that is disappointing, but perhaps the candidates that take the community for granted,” Nussbaum concluded.

Felder & Colleagues Working To Prevent Fallout From School Bus Company Bankruptcy

With Atlantic Express Bus Company expected to close its doors on December 31, Senator Simcha Felder, Chair of both the New York City Education Subcommittee and the Children and Families Committee, is working with his colleagues, Assemblyman Dov Hikind and Councilman David Greenfield, to ensure a smooth transition for the more than 40,000 affected public and private school students. Atlantic Express, which declared bankruptcy in November, was responsible for over 1,600 bus routes, leaving children on those routes without a means of transportation as of January 2, 2014.

Senator Felder has been in regular contact with high-ranking officials at the Office of Pupil Transportation who have assured him they are committed to finding other options for the affected students, including assigning the routes to other companies, providing Student MetroCards, or reimbursing parents of special needs students who send their children to school with a private car service.

“This situation is well-beyond finger pointing and the blame game,” said Senator Felder, referring to accusations made by union leaders that the bankruptcy resulted from the City’s failure to negotiate a new union contract. “The Department of Education and the Office of Pupil Transportation must come up with an immediate resolution to head off this potential crisis. The education of innocent children, particularly those with special needs, should not be disrupted over something as basic as not having an alternate way to get to school.”

“With the departure of Atlantic Express, we are nevertheless optimistic that the remaining bus companies will be able to absorb the bus routes and continue servicing our community with little or no disruption,” said Assemblyman Dov Hikind.

“After last year’s crippling strike, we cannot afford to go through a situation again where our children lose their school bus service,” remarked Councilman David Greenfield. “I appreciate Senator Felder working with me and the Office of Pupil Transportation to try and resolve this as soon as possible. The city must take all of the necessary steps before school resumes after the holiday break to ensure that no child has their education disrupted as a result of a bus company’s financial problems.”

Senator Felder, a longtime advocate of privatizing school bus service, said his landmark transportation legislation has significantly eased the burden of school transportation costs for private school students.

“Last year, over a million school children were held hostage by the union’s strike. We cannot allow petty politics to adversely affect the safety and stability of our children,” the Senator said. “Privatizing school bus service will save parents and the City a great deal of money. It is definitely a conversation worth having with City officials, and I intend to have it.”

FDNY firefighters from Engine 281, Ladder 147 and Engine 250 rescued two women from a fire on East 8th Street on Dec. 20.

Firefighters were called at around 5:30 a.m. and as they arrived, they saw heavy smoke in the rear of the building and the alleyway.

They were told three children were trapped, so they used portable ladders to quickly enter the building and conduct their search.

As fire was coming down the hallway toward them, firefighters searched the second floor of the building, including the bedroom where they were told the victims might be located.

They then got word the victims might be on the third floor, so they went upstairs located the victims – three young women – in a bathroom where they sought refuge from the extreme heat and smoke.

“It all happened in just a few minutes,” Firefighter Tom Bradley from Ladder 147 said.

Firefighter Bradley, along with Lt. Matt Martin and Firefighters Brian Clifford, Sean O’Grady, Kevin Coursey from Ladder 147 and Lt. Ken Michitsch from Engine 250, removed the victims.

They said it was difficult, as there was zero visibility in the hallways due to the heavy smoke conditions.

The victims were treated by FDNY EMS members and transported to local hospitals. One of the women died at the hospital. The other two are in critical condition.

“This was a team effort,” Firefighter Bradley said. “In this job, we don’t do anything by ourselves.”

It was noted that the residence did not have working smoke alarms, and the early notification may have helped the women evacuate before it was too late.

The New York City Office of Emergency Management (OEM) issued a Hazardous Travel Advisory for late Thursday and Friday. The National Weather Service has forecast 6 to 8 inches of snow accumulation through Friday. Light snow is expected Wednesday evening into Thursday morning with an accumulation of 1-2 inches. Snowfall rates will increase late Thursday afternoon/Thursday evening and continue until Friday afternoon. The strongest winds and heaviest snow will be between the hours of midnight and 7:00 A.M.
